Carl Panzram, der Verfasser der wohl schauerlichsten Memoiren der Kriminalgeschichte und in den 20er Jahren wohl einer der gefährlichsten Kriminellen Amerikas, schreibt in seinem „Journal of Murder“ folgendes über den „Underworld Code“ Der Ausschnitt wird von uns natürlich auf englisch belassen, ihn zu übersetzen wäre müßig. Jedenfalls erklärt uns der Meister persönlich über den „Soziolekt“ der Gauner und Ganoven. Und wetten: es kracht heftiger als im Vokabelheft der Sopranos!!! „My kind have he names for each other: „Booster“-shoplifter; „prowler“-burglar; „stickup or heister“-holdup man; „jug head“-dumbhead; „hophead“-dope fiend, a smoker of opium; „snowbird“-cocaine sniffer; „needle pumper“-hypodermic user; „conman“-confidence man; „shiv man“-knive man; „can opener“-outfit of tools to rip a safe; „peter man“-box-man or safeblower. Sometimes used to describe a man who slips a peter [Totschläger] or knock out drops in another’s drink (a Keeley). A „pimp“ is a pimp and a „McGimp“ is both or worse than either. „Paper hanger“-forger; „crape hanger“-either a gloom or a killer. Catting up a scatter or ginmill-to hold up a saloon. „Mob“ is the same as a gang, A „gunsel“ is a „punk“ and a punk is a „poofter“ and a poofter is a „pratter“ and a pratter is similar to a „fruiter“ [Anm: „Fruiter“ = „Schwuler“]. The only difference between the two is that one likes to „sit“ on it, and the other likes to „eat“ it. A face artist is a exceptionally well-experienced fruiter. One who knows his bananas better than an amateur. A „face artist“ is one who goes downtown for lunch and nose dives into the bushes when he’s hungry.
